My husband shared with me a lesson that the Lord has been teaching Him that I have asked permission to share with you, as you can probably tell from the title it's about mercy.
Mercy is defined by the Oxford English Dictionary as:
compassion or forgiveness shown towards someone whom it is within one’s power to punish or harm
Although mercy involves compassion (sympathetic pity and concern for the sufferings or misfortunes of others) or forgiveness, it goes beyond these concepts because it entails us to act in a way that is not harmful to the other person even though we may have the power or just cause to inflict it.
There are so many examples in the bible of God showing His mercy towards those who sin against Him. My husband reminded me of the example of Ahab, who along with his wife Jezebel had not only killed the prophets of God but had caused Israel to turn to worship idols. As a consequence of this God sent Eliyahu to confront King Ahab with these words (1 Kings 21):
‘Behold, I will bring calamity on you. I will take away your posterity, and will cut off from Ahab every male in Israel, both bond and free. 22 I will make your house like the house of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, and like the house of Baasha the son of Ahijah, because of the provocation with which you have provoked Me to anger, and made Israel sin.’
