Raw, gripping and incredibly moving, Falling Through Ice is the true story of Carolyn Huebner Rankin who as a young girl was tortured, held captive and sexually molested. Her story, written by Rosetta D. Hoeslli is so shocking that you will find it hard to believe you are not reading fiction.
Kidnapped from her home when she was 6 years old, Carolyn would endure years of torture at the hands of a woman who called herself her real mother. Several years later she is unexpectedly returned to the only family she has ever known, only to discover she is no longer wanted by the one woman she has always called "Mommy". Things get worse and you begin to wonder how such a little one could endure the horrors described in this book.
But, Carolyn is a survivor.
The book follows Carolyn from childhood to adulthood. She marries, has a child of her own and becomes a very successful business women, eventually starting Texas Child Search where she had located 59 missing children. As her work brings her face to face with abused and sexually molested children, Carolyn starts remembering the horrors of her past. Horrors that she had tucked down inside her, but nothing, even her success in the DA's office, can keep the darkness away, the huge chunks of missing time, her fears of closed spaces. And it cannot stop the voices in her head. What happens next is shocking and probably would never have happened if Carolyn had received the help she so desperately needed.
This book reads like a novel, but it is all true. The language is real and gritty. At times I wondered if it was a Christian book because of the language and some of the scenes which were rather descriptive. I cringed every time the Lord's name was taken in vain. I review Christian books and most, if not all, rarely use the Lord's name as a curse word. While there is mention of God throughout the book and scripture is quoted, at times it almost feels like an afterthought. If it hadn't been for the epilogue written by her husband, I would never have known Carolyn came to know the Lord as her Saviour. This, in my opinion, was an opportunity lost on how she came to finally surrender to God. I'm sure her testimony would have been powerful, with such a story behind it.
That said, Falling Through Ice is still an amazing read! I've never felt such a roller-coaster of emotions while reading a book before. It is superbly written and honestly told. A heart-wrenching book that will keep you spell-bound.
